Expressing gratitude connects people and generates a sense of care. But why do some people express more or less gratitude? It’s not as easy as we think. In our research, we have found that more mindful employees express more gratitude to one another. How does this process unfold?
First, mindfulness is a state of present awareness that broadens attention. When employees are mindful, they are able to stay in the present moment, without getting distracted by what has happened before or what will happen after. A less mindful employee might spend their day worried about the next meeting, and let tasks that spark anxiety cloud feelings about the rest of their activities. A more mindful person would stay present in the moment and focused on the task at hand. They would also be less likely to get wrapped up in stressors and, instead, realize the bigger picture. Because of this, mindful employees are more likely to recognize positive things and experience positive emotions in their work environments. For example, mindful employees are able to better see things from others’ perspective, which allows them to be able to notice how their coworkers are feeling to a greater degree.
When employees feel more positive emotions, they are more likely to notice positivity around them. This means that, when good things happen in their environment, they take note of them. This sparks gratitude. If employees don’t register that something good has happened, they can’t be grateful for it. Second, when employees are able to take others’ perspectives, they are better able to fully understand that others have taken time out of their day to help them or support them. If employees are not cognizant of others’ behaviors, they are less likely to experience gratitude.
Importantly, we find that, when employees are grateful, they are more motivated to help others - and they actually do so. This creates a relational, reciprocity norm which creates happier, healthier, and more connected workplaces. What can you do to enhance your mindfulness today?
